In comparison the application of Vertical Storage (Silos) in Ports has
many advantages to bulk storage in the open air, examples are but not
limited to:
 The Port
 Floor area: The ground space needed is about 20 to 30
percent of that of bulk storage
Quay wall: The beneficial use of the quay wall is not
obstructed by the bulk storage
Location: Due to the less smaller space it can be in the far
end of
the port area even outside the area
Environment
No dust
pollution (wind)
No water pollution (rain and/or sprinkling) and therefore
also no water treatment / purification
Nearly no
CO and CO2 emissions (with coal)
No
unsightly open stockpiles (horizontal pollution)
Safety (for coal)
Minimizing
oxygen intrusion
CO
detection systems
Fire
extinguishing systems
Energy (for coal)
Minimum energy losses (no losses by dust, water, heating,
etc.)
Management
High degree of automation:
- Less staff.
- Less handling (minimum personal and equipments)
Low operational costs.
Maintenance to a minimum.
In many cases the Vertical Storage advantages are of such an economical
weight that the required investment can be considered substantially
lower because of indirect savings in other investments.
Or from a different perspective, the investment can be written off in a
much shorter period. |
